Our Favorite Hotels
We know, we know. It’s never good to play favorites. But as travel professionals, it’s hard not to take notice when a hotel goes beyond the measure of a mere star rating.
We’ve found several hidden gems throughout our years of travel that are more than just a place to lay your head; they’re an experience in themselves. Whether it’s due to the warmth and sincerity of the staff or award-winning design that would make even Architectural Digest do a double-take, these special places leave a lasting mark on us.
Here are our team’s favorite hotels and resorts from across the world.
Wilderness Bisate | Ruengheri, Rwanda
“Situated in the Volcanoes National Park the six forest villas, designed as a homage to Rwandan royalty, are just stunning inside and out.”
“Bisate is eco-friendly luxury at its finest.”
“Each villa has a central fire place opening into the sleeping area and bathroom. The large soaking bathtub is perfect to enjoy after your trek to see the Mountain Gorillas before enjoying the most amazing earth-to-table cuisine. During your stay guests are able to participate in their reforestation program by planting a seedling anywhere on the property (seedling and trowel provided!). It is a tough challenge to provide a stay that can be as memorable as seeing the Mountain Gorillas, but Wilderness Bisate certainly has risen to the challenge!”
Royal Mansour | Marrakech, Morocco
“I felt like a little girl walking into our Riad – giddy with excitement to stay there. From the retractable roof to the private pool to the plethora of travel sized toiletries in the bathroom, I was truly in heaven on earth.”
“The staff was beyond incredible, so welcoming and friendly, the common spaces could keep anyone busy for days.“
Passalacqua | Lake Como, Italy
“The setting, the history, the service, the food, the grounds, the views!”
“The attention to every detail and the subtle nods in design provide a spectacular sensory experience. Built in the 18th century, this villa will feel like your home, and the staff will welcome you with open arms. Take time to explore the gardens, the lake, the villa, and ensure you have time on property for the staff to treat you to a bevy of fun activities, from cocktail classes, gelato making classes, to flower arranging (the hotel has their own full-time florist on property’). This is Lake Como as it should be experienced.
Belmond Maroma | Riviera Maya
“Hands down, Belmond Maroma! It was fabulous before their multi-million dollar renovation, and now its even more fabulous!”
“While the physical hotel has been meticulously updated, it is the staff at this property that makes this spot so special.“
“Their house margarita is made with a honey liquor. Delicious! Best of all, their beach is one of the loviest in all of Mexico!”
The Silo Hotel | Cape Town, South Africa
“The Silo in Cape Town! Built out of a converted grain silo that sits atop the MOCAA museum, the whole place is dripping with art. The panoramic views of Table Mountain, Lions Head Mountain, and the marina from the rooftop bar and pool are absolutely unmatched. The location is perfect – in the bustle of the waterfront, within walking distance to all the sites, but sits high enough that you don’t get any road noise.”
“The floor to ceiling pillowed-glass windows in the rooms are just magical and to top it all off, the staff could not be lovelier!”
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea | Hawaii
“Though it feels very tranquil, it’s also more of an upbeat vibe that attracts young couples, friends, babymooners, and families. Complimentary resort services outside many in-room amenities include poolside snacks, pool cabanas, and outrigger canoeing! The adults-only Serenity Pool was one of my favorite spots on the island. A stunning infinity pool with a swim up bar and the most spectacular views of the West Maui mountains and pacific ocean.”
“Start your day with Duo’s breakfast buffet. I promise you the chocolate chip pancakes will be the best of your life!! And do not miss the gorgeous oceanside dinner at Ferraro’s.”
Rosewood Le Guanahani | St.Barth
“…it does not get more chic in the Caribbean than St. Barts. And in St. Barts, it doesn’t get more luxurious than Rosewood Le Guanahani.”
“They have two beautiful beaches, and a stunning beachfront infinity pool, beach bar and dining. The resort is perched on the hillside and surrounded by exotic gardens. The have a great spa, with a private spa pool. The beachside of the resort has stunning clear blue water which is great for snorkeling, and is said to be one of the best spots to see sea turtles.”
Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC
“It now happens to be in our backyard, but my favorite hotel is Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC! We spent last New Year’s Eve there and had the best time!”
“They truly made us feel special and welcomed, especially the kids!”
“Everywhere we went, from the lobby, to the restaurant, to the pool, we were met with the warmest, kindest staff. Plus the room was so spacious and comfortable.”
NIHI Sumba | Indonesia
“Aside from the sheer beauty of property, the whole experience is amazing. Who doesn’t love arriving in a safari vehicle after being greeted by hundreds of waiving children en route from the airport?!?!”
“Villas are stunning and unique, staff is very attentive and the island still has an undiscovered vibe.“
“From the beautiful “white night” dinner party to the spa safari, NIHI is truly special. Great for families and couples, avid surfers, adventure seekers and those simply wanting to take it all in. Worth the journey!”
Hotel das Cataratas | Iguassu Falls, Brazil
“Hotel das Cataratas, a Belmond Hotel, is right in the middle of Iguazu National Park in Brazil, with an unimpeded view of the Iguazu Falls right from your window. We’re talking front-row seats to one of the most breathtaking waterfalls on the planet, without even leaving your room!”
“…the access to the falls right out the front door makes it feel like your private park, rather than one of the most famous wonders in the world.”
“The property exudes comfortable luxury – the kind that welcomes you and makes your stay truly special. The food is amazing and really showcases the local ingreduents and cuisine. Finally, they’re all about keeping things sustainable, a must for any property to make it on my list.”
Nayara Springs | San Carlos, Costa Rica
Four Seasons Hualalai | Hawaii
“It’s a tie between Nayara Springs & Four Seasons Hualalai.”
“For a couples trip, Nayara Springs is beautiful & lush – perfect for a romantic getaway. Plus, having your own private hot spring is dreamy!”
“For a family trip, Four Seasons Hualalai feels decadent & uniquely Hawaiian. The service is impeccable and there are so many activities, including snorkeling in King’s Pond “aquarium”.
Hacienda Zuleta | Ecuador
“Last Thanksgiving my kids and I got to experience Hacienda Zuleta, outside of Quito in Ecuador. The grounds are truly spectacular—green, lush, and full of flowers.”
“It is a wonderful place to escape the world, relax, reconnect with family, and be with friends.”
“With wood burning fireplaces and firepits throughout the property it is all just perfectly cozy. The Hacienda offered tons of activities, letting us keep it simple as we did things together as a family. Our highlights were horseback riding through the Andes and a class on the traditional embroidery techniques of the region – not only great fun but a chance to support the local community and culture. And they make the most terrific cheese on the property which I happily ate at each meal.”
