Renewing Your Passport Online: Everything You Need to Know
The days of mailing in your passport renewal application may soon be behind us! The US is piloting an online program that allows Americans to renew their passport digitally. The processing time will be similar to the current window of eight to eleven weeks. However, without the need for mailing, travelers will still save time and energy when applying online. For many of us this is welcomed news! But as with any change in travel regulations, it comes with questions. Here’s what you need to know about the anticipated launch of online passport renewals.
When will this be available to all travelers?
The pilot program concluded in early August after accepting 25,000 applicants. Pending the results of the pilot, the State Department estimates that travelers will be able to renew their passports online in early 2023.
Should I wait to renew my currently expired passport?
With the expected launch potentially just months away, you may be tempted to put off renewing your expired passport. Although it’s a pain, we recommend renewing your passport per usual until the online program officially begins. Our Avenue Two team can help you navigate the process and even expedite your fresh new passport in as little as five to seven weeks.
